Learn or sharpen your carving
Woodcarving classes in Hornindal suit you whether you are a beginner or advanced and need professional guidance and inspiration. You mostly receive individual instruction according to your wishes and needs, alongside group teaching. Each class has eight seats, filled as enrolments arrive.
These are not classes split by motif or style — everyone works side by side, each at their own level, and the teaching adapts at the bench. The emphasis is on acanthus, but other styles and relief carving are open to you too.
The teaching language adapts to the participants — Norwegian and English, and basic school German.
Wood, fjord and mountain — never far away
The wood comes from the forest around us, and you work in touch with the material it comes from. Many arrive as strangers and leave as friends — and return year after year.
Weekend I — spring
Friday evening to Sunday afternoon at the bench. A fine first meeting with the knife, or a weekend to get going again.
Evenings — winter/spring
Five evenings, roughly every other week. For those nearby who want to build their carving step by step.
Summer — weeks 26–28
Monday to Friday, one or two weeks. The longest stretch at the bench — many return year after year.
- +Individual guidance to your level
- +Group teaching and sharpening technique
- +Use of tools at the bench
- +Acanthus, other styles and relief
It is about the way there
It is in the cut, the patience, the mistakes and the mending that the hand learns. The finished piece is only the trace of the hours.
Three at the bench, meals shared, and the talk that runs while the irons sing. Many arrive as strangers and leave as friends.
The wood comes from the forest around us, and the fjord and mountains are never far. You work in touch with where the material comes from.
You feel generations of knowledge pass through your hands and become something beautiful — knowledge that is now yours as well.
Getting there & facilities
The workshop is at Taraldset in Hornindal, deep in Nordfjord, ringed by mountain and forest. It is easiest to reach by car; the nearest airports are Ørsta–Volda and Sandane, and buses run to the village. You work in a bright, warm workshop with proper benches and plenty of tools — and if you need lodging, I am glad to help you find a room nearby.
Everything is included
Everything you need is included in the class — tools, gouges and guidance at the bench. And when you are ready to take the next step, you can buy tools, equipment and blanks right there: Rolf deals a broad range of woodcarving supplies, so you can kit yourself out while you are here.
